Football Brisbane has received notice from Southport Soccer Club (SC) of their intention to withdraw from the 2020 Brisbane Women’s Premier League (BWPL) competition.
After consultation and discussion with Football Gold Coast and Southport SC, Football Brisbane has accepted Southport’s withdrawal from the competition effective immediately.
Southport’s decision was not made lightly, but it will allow the club to rebuild their Women’s football program through the Gold Coast Metro Leagues and should they wish to, nominate for a Women’s Capital League position in future years.
As a result of this decision, Southport are also not eligible to compete in the 2020 Elaine Watson Cup.
Following Southport’s withdrawal, the two relegated teams in the 2019 BWPL (Taringa and North Brisbane) and the 3rd and 4th placed team in the 2019 Women’s Capital League l (Caboolture and North Star) were invited to take the vacant position in the BWPL but have chosen to remain in Women’s Capital League l.
Football Brisbane will now open the position to a nomination process, whereby any eligible Women’s Capital League l club may apply for consideration for the position. Further information regarding this nomination process will be communicated to those clubs shortly.
