Football Brisbane is delighted to confirm an unprecedented surge in referee registrations with the total number of 2021 referee registrations in Football Brisbane reaching 500 and continuing to grow.
This total means that just three months into the year, registrations have increased by more than 10% compared to 2020.
Football Brisbane Referees Coach and Development Officer Steve Jones says he is excited by this increase, attributing it to the continually improving referee environment.
“We are very pleased about this news as we’ve welcomed both brand new referees signing up to the program as well as returning referees some of whom have spent as long as eight years away before deciding to return,” says Jones.
For the 2021 season, the Football Brisbane Board has offered free registration to referees having charged $79.50 for under 18s and $95.00 for over 18s in previous years.
The free registration initiative has been introduced after consultation with clubs who identified that recruitment and retention of referees were major priorities in order to provide greater coverage of matches by Football Brisbane match officials.
“In discussions with referees we found that one of the barriers in either becoming a referee in the first place or returning to refereeing each season is the significant start-up costs involved so we have been delighted to implement this change in 2021,” says Football Brisbane General Manager Rafe Griffin.
“It’s great to see that this initiative in combination with the hard work being done by our referees department to create an enjoyable environment for officials, has already had such a major impact as we continue to support Football Queensland’s strategic goal of doubling the number of referees in the state by 2022.”
